Are staves ever better than a good wand + a good artifact?
i've never once used a staff in this game...the artifacts, especially the collector ones, plus a good wand seem to always be better than even the best staves i can come across...does anyone choose to use a 2 handed weapon over a 1 handed?

Staves have the potential to be superior to Wands and Focuses, but because of the nature of their modifiers - a good staff is exceedingly rare, which is why most people don't use them.

I do sometimes. It's an 11-22 dmg bone staff with +10 energy, and 20% chance on both my main attribute casting speed and recharge speed increase. I use it both for the +20% increases, but also because I have two upgrades added onto it which increases my armor +9, which is really effective. So when I'm using my main attribute a lot (death magic) and need faster casting and recharge times along with more protection against damage, I'll equip the staff.
My max one handed weapon and max offhand combo gives me +30 Health and +27 Energy along with +20% chance for death magic to recharge faster, but it also has a -1 Energy regen. The bonus energy and health may seem awesome, and they are... but my death magic is less effective, and I have less armor. So this is what I switch to when using my secondary skills more, like healing or smiting prayers, since the energy pool is higher.
The big plus for a one-handed/offhand setup is that one can usually get a combo that offers a lot more energy than a staff does at base value. However, staves can accept two upgrades that could potentially offset this, and if the staff has a 20/20 bonus that effects the attribute you most use, that can make it worth carrying or at least switching too.
I switch between mine frequently.

For pvp you want to be using a staff and switching focuses when you're low on energy. For pve, do whatever the hell you want.

The big difference between a good staff and a a wand/focus combo in my opinon is the 20% bonuses. You can only have 20/20 for one skill with a staff. With a wand/focus combo you can have the 20/20 on the focus and an addition 20% recharge on another skill line.

well my wand has crappy damage but it has +15 energy and my artifact has +22. I VERY much doubt there is a staff out there with + 38 energy so I will stick with my wand and artifact thanks

You also have 2 bips of energy.
Not worth the trade off IMO
